Confirmatory Search and Asymmetric Dominance

چکیده

Decisionmakers use confirmatory search strategies in judgment tasks. As a result of this, their attention towards task-relevant cues is biased in favor of cues supporting available responses. Changing these responses can alter the cues used in the judgment task and, subsequently, alter beliefs. We use this mechanism to predict and explain the emergence of the asymmetric dominance effect in judgment. In four sets of experiments, we document systematic changes in belief, as dominated options are added to the response set. These effects emerge for a number of naturalistic judgment tasks and are mediated by the increased accessibility of decoy-supporting cues. Finally, these effects can be eliminated when the decision maker’s attention is drawn towards the cues supporting the non-dominant response. Probabilistic analysis of the asymmetric digital search trees

In this paper, by applying three functional operators the previous results on the (Poisson) variance of the external profile in digital search trees will be improved. We study the profile built over $n$ binary strings generated by a memoryless source with unequal probabilities of symbols and use a combinatorial approach for studying the Poissonized variance, since the probability distribution o...

Asymmetric Dominance Effect with Multiple Decoys for Low- and High-Variance Lotteries

The asymmetric dominance effect refers to the phenomenon according to which the choice probability of an alternative increases when an inferior alternative the decoy is included into the choice set. The objective of this experimental study is twofold. First, we investigate the asymmetric dominance effect on two-outcome lotteries with almost equal expected values. We find that the impact of a de...

Asymmetric dominance and phantom decoy effects in games

In individual choices between alternatives x and y, the availability of a third alternative z, judged inferior to x but not to y, tends to increase preferences for x. Two experiments investigated corresponding strategic asymmetric dominance effects in games. In Experiment 1, 72 players chose strategies in six symmetric 3 · 3 games, each having one strategy dominating just one other, or in reduc...

Findings - Biased but Efficient: An Investigation of Coordination Facilitated by Asymmetric Dominance

I several marketing contexts, strategic complementarity between the actions of individual players demands that players coordinate their decisions to reach efficient outcomes. Yet coordination failure is a common occurrence. We show that the well-established psychological phenomenon of asymmetric dominance can facilitate coordination in two experiments. Thus, we demonstrate a counterintuitive re...

Asymmetric interference associated with force amplitude and hand dominance in bimanual constant isometric force.

This study investigated the asymmetry of bilateral interference in relation to the relative difference of force amplitude between hands and the hand dominance. In Experiment 1, one hand produced a fixed constant force of 5% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) while the other hand produced different constant forces of 5%, 20%, and 50% MVC in blocked conditions. Asymmetric interference in force a...
